The local leaders in Bukonzo County west have asked the newly appointed Minister of State for Trade, industries and cooperatives Gen. Wilson Mbadi Mbasu to facilitate the transfer of the fish market from Democratic Republic of Congo to the Uganda’s border market at Mpondwe.
Mr Sunday Peter Kakule the Nyakiyumbu sub-county chairperson who was speaking on behalf of the eight sub-county chairpersons in Bukonzo West said the shift of the fish market from Uganda to DRC in 2020, has left so many young people unemployed at the border.
He also reiterated that the transfer of the market has caused a shrink in the revenue collections of the lower local governments along the border.
Kasese district chairperson Mr Eliphazi Muhindi Bukombi emphasised the critical role the transfer of the market back to Uganda would play in enhancing the livelihoods of the people at the border.
Mr Muhindi implored Gen Wilson Mbadi who recently assumed the docket of the minister of state for trade to interest himself in the matter and engage President Museveni about the same so that it is expeditiously resolved.
Responding to the plea, Gen Mbadi who was chief guest at pass out ceremony of patriotism clubs at Bwera Secondary School, said that his office is working round the clock to the have the two governments establish a lasting solution to the challenges in the fish market at the border.
