Residents of Kidodo Cell in the Railway Ward of the Central Division in Kasese Municipality have decried the continued invasion of stray elephants from the Queen Elizabeth National Park into the community.
The residents’ outcry follows the most recent incident that happened last night where a herd of elephants strayed into the community leaving the residents in fear for their lives and property.
Ms Suzan Ithungu, a resident in the area says she sighted about eight elephants near her compound at around 9:00pm and immediately locked all the family members inside the house.
She argues that their lives have for long been threatened by wild animals, something that deprives them of their rights to establish projects that would help them improve their livelihoods.
Mr. Julius Mai-Mai, another resident stresses that the continued prevalence of wild beasts might force the community members to get attempted to harm them if government does not put in place mechanisms of restricting the animals from straying into the community land.
Mr. Geoffrey Sharif Masereka, the Kidodo Cell Chairperson wonders why government that had carried a survey for the erection of an electric wire fence in the area has delayed to implement the project.
However, an effort to get a comment from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officials was futile by press time. ENDS
