The Chief Executive Officer for Kilembe Investments Limited, a prominent power distribution company in Western Uganda has noted that the practice of cutting down trees can only be stopped if the citizens embraced smart cooking using electricity both at household and institutional levels.
Ms Jane Masika Birungi says using electricity for cooking and lighting reduces the costs of fuel and enables people to conserve the environment through shying away from deforestation.
She sounded the remarks yesterday while speaking to our reporter at her office in Kasese town.
According to her, most hills are now bare due to high demand for firewood by the population.
She happily says the company has committed itself to expanding power to some rural areas as guided by government in a bid to avert the practice of cutting down trees for firewood, asking the residents to embrace smart cooking.
Birungi reveals that Kasese district has so far reached 70% in terms of power connections against the whole country’s 50% rate.
To the Landlords, the Chief Executive Officer observes need for them to provide individual sub-meters to the tenants as an alternative measure of managing and controlling power at their own pace.
