Local leadership decry low production of salt from Katwe Salt Lake

BY JOACKIM KULE

Local revenue in Katwe – K’abatooro Town Council, Kasese district has been greatly affected by the destruction of salt pans following the heavy rains that befell the area last year.

Mr. John Bosco Kananura, the Town Council Chairperson says the salt miners currently collect less than 15% of the quantity of salt compared to the previous years when the economic activity could be the biggest source of income to the urban centre.

According to him, the livelihoods of his electorate have been affected since 90% of the population in the area depends on salt mining.

The Town Council political head is skeptical that the urban centre might not realize enough funds to implement the planned activities in the current budget.

He has since advised the residents to also embrace other economic activities as an alternative source of income.
