A hail storm that the most part of the district suffered yesterday continued to inflict more damage across the district, Messiah Radio has learnt.
A preliminary report from the Kasese District Disaster Management Committee indicates that last evening’s heavy windstorms also destroyed several houses at the Muhokya Internally Displaced Persons Camp.
Yesterday, Messiah Radio mentioned some church structures and institutions that were destroyed as a result of the disaster.
Now, Kasese District Senior Planner, Mr. Joseph Singoma who also doubles as the District Disaster Focal Person says that at least 133 shelters, three toilets and some roads were destroyed.
Mr. Isingoma also revealed that Saad Islamic Primary School and Bibwe, Rwabihungu primary schools in Muhokya Sub County were all affected by the disaster after each had at least two class rooms deroofed.
He explains that they are now compiling a rapid assessment report that will be submitted to the office of the prime minister and other humanitarian agencies in the hope that the affected people will be supported to get back on their feet.
In Muhokya Sub County alone, about twelve shops were put down by the rains according to the sub county chief Julius Kule Ndungu.
Ms. Aryema Rehema Namale, the Chairperson for Muhokya IDP Camp asks government to expedite the process of resettling the internally displaced persons who have been encamped for more than three years now.
Late August this year, the Uganda National Metrological Authority UNMA had warned the current rains would be above normal especially in the areas around Lake Vitoria Basin and the districts in the Rwenzori region including Kasese, Bunyangabu, Kabarole, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo.
They advised the people to have enough foods stocked in preparedness for the anticipated heavy rains that would run from September to December. ENDS
