Kasese leaders make case for expeditious rural electrification

By Joackim Kule

The local leaders in Kasese district have asked government to expedite the processes to have all communities connected to the electricity grid through the Rural Electrification program.

They made their appeal yesterday to the State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development as he was commissioning thirteen power lines in Kasese District at Katooke Trading Center in Bugoye sub-county.

Mr. James Katalikawe Muthulhanda, the Bugoye sub county Chairperson explains that most villages do not have access to electricity power, yet it would play a vital role in adding value to agricultural produce.

Mr. Robert Mbusa Kisunzu, the Kasese District Secretary for Works and Technical Services says that whereas government has extended high voltage power to some sub counties and Town Councils, it is yet to be distributed to members of the community.

He also emphasised the need to have some other sub-counties especially Mahango, Kitholhu, Nyakabingo, Mbunga, Kilembe and Kyarumba to be surveyed and also have them benefit from the rural electrification program.

Responding to their concerns, State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Opolot Okasai reaffirmed to them that government remains committed to extending power to all communities within the country by 2030.
