Uganda registers 1,000 new HIV/AIDS infections every week, a report by the UNAIDS has revealed.
UNAIDS says despite government’s efforts to fight the prevalence, some people have not adhered to the preventive measures.
Ms Nyasha Munazuo from the UNAIDS made the revelation yesterday while reading the report to a number of stakeholders in district and cultural leaders during a dialogue that was organized by the Uganda AIDS under the Office of the President at Sandton Hotel in Kasese town.
She revealed that Uganda registers 52,000 new infections every year according to their 2024 survey. This translates to 1,000 infections per week.
Ms Munazuo observed that stigmatization and deliberate refusal of men to take the initial effort of testing still pose a significant challenge against the fight of AIDS in Uganda.
In his remarks, the Kasese District Chairperson, Mr. Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi commended the government for organizing such a dialogue with the district leadership, pledging that his council would be at the forefront of fighting against the scourge.
He reported that because of its proximity with the DRC, Kasese has always been hit by numerous diseases including Mpox, calling for more government support in combating such challenges.
