Rise in opium growing worries Nyakabingo leaders

BY JOACKIM KULE

Residents of Kibalya village, Nyakabingo Sub-county in Kasese district have raised concerns over the speed at which opium (bhangi) is being grown against food crop growing in the area.

Mr. Hudson Condenser, the Local Council I Chairperson for Kibalya village argues that instead of some people planting food crops, they are resorting to opium growing.

He wonders what the motivation for opium growing could be yet it has potential to cause food insecurity in the area.

Condenser told Messiah Radio today morning that he has already notified police to intervene, investigate, and identify farmers together with their potential buyers so that they are all apprehended.

He makes a passionate appeal for parents to take parenting very seriously and ensure to groom responsible children who will not only keep in school but also refrain from drug abuse.

Mr. Selevest Muhindo Sibendirana Karubika, a resident in the same area says the rise in the rate of drug abuse is synonymous with a surge in the cases of theft within the community.
