Kasese district to be declared mpox free

Kasese District will soon be declared Mpox free after spending more than three months without registering any new positive case.

On July 24 last year, the Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of Mpox in the country with Kasese district having the very first two cases.

They involved a 37 year-old Congolese Housewife who lives in Kambukamabwe and a 22 year –old man in Kamukumbi.

Later, other six positive cases were reported involving a 30 year-old boda-boda rider in Kabuyiri Cell and a 27 year-old casual laborer in Nyabugando among others.

Dr. Amon Bwambale, the Kasese District Health Officer told Messiah Radio today morning shortly after a Taskforce Meeting that was held at Booma Grounds in Kasese town that by the end of October last year, they had registered only eight accumulative cases with no deaths.

According to Dr. Bwambale, the current trend of the disease spread warrants the Ministry to declare the district Mpox free since the time required for monitoring the situation had been completed. 

He, however, observed the need for the residents to continue adhering to the pieces of advice and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health towards containing the disease that is still reported in other parts of the country.

Mr. Zepher Mubingwa, the Kasese Deputy RDC in-charge of Busongora County who chaired the meeting commended the efforts of both health workers and development partners towards heightening surveillance and monitoring the patients at their respective hospital beds and homes after being discharged.

He also reported that in addition to surveillance, they opened up clinics at the border points purposely to aid the checking of immigrants and emigrants.
