Coffee dealers and traders in Kasese town have told the Kasese Municipality Member of Parliament that they are opposed to the government’s decision to merge Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.
The bill aims to dissolve the Coffee Development Authority and transfer its functions to the Ministry responsible for agriculture. This change aligns with the Government Policy on the Rationalization of Government Agencies and Public Expenditure, serving related purposes.
Today afternoon, Hon. Ferigo Kambale held a consultative meeting with the coffee dealers who told him to present before the floor of parliament the opinions of the public, indicating that they were not in support of the bill.
The legislator who tried to explain to the coffee dealers that by merging UCDA, the government was trying to reduce accelerated salaries that the employees of the organization were taking, was only told to report to parliament that they were not in support of the said move by government.
The coffee dealers argued that they were so fearful that the bill might be a way of making Ugandans who depend on coffee poor.
According to them, they were so skeptical that the coffee bill might grant the rights of coffee business to some individuals to benefit on behalf of all Ugandans.
