Communities living near the Queen Elizabeth National Park have received over 2,000 birds from the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) under the Livelihood Support Program.
According to Chrispus Muhindo from WWF, the initiative is meant to give back to the communities and support household incomes.
Muhindo explained that the same communities are often affected by the problem animal from the park.
He noted that supporting alternative livelihoods helps to reduce the human-wildlife conflict by giving people sources of income beyond crops raided by animals.
Stephen Mbera, the Nyakatonzi Sub-county Chairperson, said bird distribution complements the Parish Development Model program. He pledged that as farmers, they would take good care of the birds.
Peace Birungi, the Coordinator of the beneficiary Group, applauded WWF for the support that would help them improve their livelihood.
