Two people in Kasese are in police custody on allegations of killing a chimpanzee from the Rwenzori Mountains National park.
Modesto Kamathe, the Kilembe Sub-county Chairperson, identifies the suspects as Nason Bosso, Musubaho Kadumbe and others still at large from Bunyandiko village. According to Kamathe, the suspects were arrested on Monday.
The outgoing sub-county boss says it is unfortunate that the community has embarked on destroying some endangered species of animals that attract a lot of tourists.
He is concerned that the vice might lead to unemployment among the youths in the area citing an example of Rwenzori Trekking Services that has employed more than 600 youths.
The incident comes barely two weeks after four people were arrested on allegations of killing of 6 Lions in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kihihi sub-county, Kanungu district.
Lions and Chimpanzees are a key tourism attraction in Uganda’s national parks.
