The National Council for Persons with Disabilities, together with the Integrated Development Initiative Uganda, has established an ICT Hub in Kasese District to equip persons with disabilities with essential digital skills.
The initiative seeks to empower persons with disabilities through digital literacy, vocational training and stronger advocacy for the implementation of disability rights, enabling them to participate more meaningfully in education, employment and the digital economy.
Dr. Sinmyung Park, the Project Manager at Infectious Diseases Institute Uganda, says while technology continues to transform learning, communication and business, many persons with disabilities have been left behind due to limited access to inclusive digital learning facilities, assistive technologies and opportunities to acquire computer skills prompting the Korea International Cooperation Agency-KOICA to avail funds to support the establishment of an ICT hub at Kasese Municipal Council Headquarters.
Mr Peter Baluku, the chairperson of Kasese District Union of Persons with Disabilities-KADUPEDI, says the ICT Hub will provide practical computer literacy training to persons with disabilities, enabling them to access online learning platforms, improve their employability and their active participate in today’s digital economy.
Lillian Namukasa, the Programs Manager at the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, urged Kasese Municipal Council to ensure that all ICT equipment is properly protected and remains within the facility so it can continue serving its intended purpose.
The partners believe that strengthening digital inclusion alongside effective implementation of disability policies will reduce stigma, promote equal opportunities and improve the livelihoods of persons with disabilities across the Rwenzori region. ENDS
