Local leaders in Nyakiyumbu sub-county, Kasese District have demanded the government to extend electricity in the area, saying that once the people are connected, they would be curtailed from using firewood and the costs of fuel.
Mr. Samson Kule Kikwaya, the Chairperson Local Council I for Lyakirema II village says that most residents have not benefited from the programme of rural electrification, forcing them to continue cutting down trees and spending money on buying fuel.
According to him, such incidents limit the efforts of environmental conservation because fuel and firewood produce fumes and gasses when cooking.
He asks the government to consider connecting all the people to electricity as one of the ways of reducing the practice of cutting trees.
The village chairperson also explains that they are lacking access to healthcare services, noting that the only Health Center II in Lyakirema Parish lacks a code that gives it mandate to receive reliable medical supplies.
The Nyakiyumbu Sub-county Vice Chairperson, Jerald Rulente also decries the poor road network in the area, calling for government’s intervention into the matter.
The Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi, however, assures the residents that government is committed to ensuring that all the necessary services are extended to the people.
He calls for good working relations with their leaders in order to have an amplified voice that is aimed at making advocacy for development.
