Residents in Kasese District have been advised to stop allowing their children to lonely cross rivers in an attempt to prevent some cases related to drowning as the Local Government starts experiencing enhanced rains.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Water and Environment issued a notice to the Kasese District leaders, indicating that the Local Government would experience heavy rains at the end of this month.
The same notice indicated that the anticipated heavy rains would be associated with floods and mudslidesresulting from running waters.
Yesterday morning, Herbert Katya, the Kasese Municipal Councilor representing Katiri Ward in Bulembia Division, warned that the people should stay vigilant of the rivers streaming from the Rwenzori Mountains because some of them have started showing signs of flooding.
Katya advised that the parents should stop allowing their children to play in the water streams and ensure escorting them to the learning institutions and pick them back in the evening hours.
Katya also appealed to the residents who are living in the disaster-prone areas to seek refuge from their relatives in the safer places.
The Kasese District Senior Planner, Joseph Singoma, who doubles as the District Disaster Focal Person, also stressed that the residents should stop sitting or standing under trees while it is raining because the rains are anticipated to be associated with winds, thunder and lightning. ENDS
