Teachers in Kasese District have been called upon to protect their integrity in the respective communities as one way of inspiring young people to embrace and become passionate about their teaching profession.
The call was sounded today afternoon by Mr. Joshua Bwambale Kiregheya, the UNATU Chairperson for Kasese Municipality while speaking to our reporter as the teacher marked the 60th Teachers’ Day worldwide. The day was celebrated virtually.
Kiregheya, who told our reporter that they were celebrating the day under the theme, “Celebrating Teachers, creating a Lasting Value,” said that the teachers play a vital role in shaping the society and needed to set standards for precedence after retirement by becoming role models to the young people.
According to him, they should also be committed to their work, respect and participate fully in sensitizing the population about social, political, spiritual and cultural values.
Kiregheya also challenged them to interest themselves in analyzing and interpreting the Education Act and the Teacher Policy in an attempt to run schools within the legal means.
He, however, underscored the need for the teachers to be provided with psychosocial support, saying that they go through a lot of challenges that deteriorate their health standards.
According to him, the country nearly loses 500 teachers on an annual basis for the yet unknown causes.
