Kasese residents urged to vacate disaster-prone areas

BY JOACKIM KULE

Residents in Kasese District who are still living in disaster- prone areas have been reminded to relocate to safer places with immediate effect as the district is expected to experience floods in this month of October.

A weather forecast issued by the Ministry of Water and Environment indicates that there is a likelihood of the district receiving floods and mudslides especially on the steep slopes and fast mountain rivers.

The Ministry highlights that the communities which are likely to be affected are those living in Kilembe sub-county, Nyamwamba and Bulembia Divisions because of River Nyamwamba.

Bugoye, Maliba and Kyarumba sub-counties are too at risk because of the river Mubuku and Nyamughasana.

Other areas are the Central Division, Lake Katwe, Katwe-Kabatooro Town Council, Nyakiyumbu and Nyakatonzi sub-counties because of the Lake Edward.

The Kasese District Chairperson for the Disaster Management Committee, Mustafa Kikusa, confirmed receipt of the warning, calling for cooperation in ensuring that the effects do not harm the people.

Speaking to Messiah Radio yesterday at his office, Mr. Karim Baluku Kisembo, the Kasese District Secretary for Works, Production and Technical Services, called on the people to adhere to the precautions issued to them in advance before they register negative incidents.

He also discouraged the people from walking under rain so as to prevent individuals from incidents related to thunder and lightning or flooding through the running waters.
