Tensions have raised among the leaders of Kasese over sanga meat dominance in the district after the neighboring Shema District warns them of the need to stop it from crossing to their region.
Early this week, Shema District in a formal letter to the Kasese RDC advised them to stop the meat from crossing to their district, noting that they had suspected anthrax disease in their area.
Kasese Deputy RDC in-charge of Bukonzo County, Lt. Maate Magwara who acknowledges having received a letter from their counterpart from Shema says that on their part they haven’t found the mechanism of abandoning the business in the area because their efforts are looted by politics.
Magwara also regrets that despite sanga meat, other unverified things including ovals, legs for chicken have taken the lead in the district. He said that they haven’t yet established their source and the reason why they are only sold to the populace of Kasese.
Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi complained that the district during the previous leadership did make a resolution against selling and consuming sanga meat but the efforts were hampered by political factors.
Kasese Assistant District Health Officer for Environment Health, Stephen Bagonza, explains that as they try to enforce sanga abolition, the consumers complain of their inability to buy fresh meat because their prices are higher than those of sanga meat.
He suggests to the leaders to first sensitize the people so that they can appreciate its harmful impact on them so that they embrace stopping it.
Rtd. Rev. Can. Jane Janet Muhindo of South Rwenzori Diocese advises the leaders to expedite the processes of ending its trade from the district.
