Residents in Kasese District have been asked to tighten their vigilance towards preventing the negative effects of the anticipated flooding of rivers as the March- May season nears its cessation.
Mr. Joseph Singoma, the Kasese District Disaster Focal Person says that their weather forecast is still indicating that the district might experience heavy rains during the course of this month, which might lead to land sliding and flooding of some rivers.
Mr. Singoma, who regrets the recent incident where a life was lost in Kyarumba Town Council following the flooding of River Nyamughasana, cautions the residents against crossing river points that are not recommended.
Singoma also calls upon leaders in the sub-county of Munkunyu to enforce the law against the human -economic activities taking place in the area which according to him have negatively impacted the environment.
Singoma argues that some people have illegally initiated some activities like stone quarrying and sand mining which sometimes put the lives of the residents at risk of getting disasters because they do not only harbor water but also act as breeding places for mosquitoes.
He also calls on the people to adopt the new farming methods including terracing, mulching and planting trees as one of the mitigation measures to disasters especially soil erosion.
