The Inspectorate of Government, Fort-portal Regional Office has pledged to intervene in the matter of alleged delays and vandalism of construction materials of Nyangorongo -Isule Water Gravity Flow Scheme in Maliba Sub-county, Busongora County North in Kasese District.
Nyangorongo water project, which is under construction at a tune of shillings 9.5 billion, started being constructed in January 2024 and was expected to be completed in May 2026.
This project is being funded by the Government of Uganda with support from the Indian Exim Bank, with an aim of serving a population of 43,000 people.
Over the time, the leaders in Kasese District have been complaining about the contractor’s delay to complete the project in the agreed period.
The delay has forced them to report the matter to the office of the Inspectorate of Government that was in the district yesterday for a community baraza. The baraza, which was aimed at getting feedback about service delivery in various entities, was held at the District Multipurpose hall.
Last evening, Ivan Magala, the Regional Head of the Inspectorate of Government at Fort-Portal said that they had been informed of the challenge and had picked interest in it.
According to him, the leaders told them many cases including the vandalism and theft of the construction materials by the site clerks who are under investigations.
Magala also faulted the leaders for allegedly not supervising the contractors, noting that they have the powers to ensure that the projects that they do are effectively and efficiently being implemented.
He called upon the community members to know their role of overseeing government activities as one of the ways of fighting against corruption.
Ms. Christine Lamwaka, the Assistant Director of Advocacy and Capacity Building, also told the people to embrace the idea of reporting corruption tendencies especially the service commissions which have become growing concerns across the country.
The Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi, asked the village leaders to always monitor contractors of government projects in their respective communities by asking them to first present some scope of work, the bills of quantities and the estimated time of completion.
