Breastfeeding mothers sit for PLE in Kasese

At least some primary seven candidates in Kasese district have done the Primary Leaving Examinations while breastfeeding as others attempted the questions while pregnant.

Kasese district registered a total of 12,751 candidates for the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations.

At Kabatunda Primary School in Kabatunda – Kirabaho Town Council, Busongora County North, some candidates came with their babies to write today’s Mathematics and English papers in the morning and afternoon hours respectively.

Eric Meso, the School’s Head teacher, told our reporter who the institution that two of his primary seven candidates who recently gave birth managed to turn up to their exams. He also revealed that other two candidates are expecting.

Meso stressed that although the babies cried, their mothers managed to finish their exams very well.

According to him, the young mothers came with their relatives who acted as baby sitters and after the morning paper, the breastfeeding mothers immediately went to the office of the Head teacher to attend to their babies.

Meso also used this platform to disclose that five other candidates at the same school missed today’s exams. Similar cases were confirmed at Kinyaminagha, Kibiri and Kyamuduma primary schools.

One of the young mothers explained that she gave birth a month ago. She, however, said she wants to struggle to complete senior four so that she joins a Nursing Institution to offer health services to her village mates.

At Bisusa Model Primary School in Maliba Town Council, two girls turned up for the exams while pregnant. The development was confirmed by the Zonal leader, Mr. Charles Masereka Bahati, the head teacher at Nkaiga Primary School.

According to him, one other candidate at his school turned up while breastfeeding.

Other cases are at Ighanza Primary School in Mahango Sub-county, Izinga Primary School in Maliba Sub-county and Bughendero primary school in Buhuhira Sub-county.
