Gender Based Violence cases blamed on ignorance of the law among residents in Kasese

BY JONAN MUZUGIT

Ignorance of the law has been cited as one of the major causes of Gender Based Violence among the communities.

The remarks were sounded yesterday by the Project Coordinator for UGANET, Diana Nakayita while addressing the duty bearers during a dialogue aimed at engaging them in the prevention of cases of Gender Based Violence in Maliba Sub- County and Maliba Town Council, Busongora County North, Kasese district.

After listening to all submissions from the Community leaders, Nakayita observed that it was due to lack of understanding and exercising the law that had increased the prevalence of cases of Gender Based Violence, appealing to the community members to interest themselves in understanding the law.

Ruth Labongo, the Maliba Sub- County Community Development Officer, said they had embarked on organizing community barazas to create awareness among the residents about the use of the law.

She called upon the community leaders to sensitize the residents about the need to combine efforts during parenting and caring for the children.

Mary Biira, one of the participants and a survivor of Gender Based Violence told our reporter that she came to learn that some parents neglect their children after failing to take them through the behavioural change classes where they are told to grow as citizens with good morals.
