Supporters of three people who participated in the recent NRM primary elections seeking the party for the position of Nyamwamba Division Chairperson were today left stranded at their district offices when the Registrar, Amon Mbusa, declined to announce the results from the previous vetting exercise.
The results for Nyamwamba Division were on Thursday last week not declared because the declaration forms for Kogere Cell in Rukoki Ward were not dully signed by the candidates’ agents.
Subsequently, the party Registrar, Amon Mbusa announced that the elections would be repeated on Saturday last week but upon arrival at the polling station, the voters saw the election officials being withdrawn by the NRM leadership.
Today morning, the voters and some of the candidates thronged the party offices to witness the official declaration of the results and by 4:00pm, they saw police commanded by the Kasese Divional Police Commander surrounding the premises.
Minutes later, the party officials were seen leaving the premises, leaving the candidates’ supporters stranded.
When the press approached the Party Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yunus Muhindo, explained that the District NRM Executive resolved in a meeting that the election at Kogere Cell polling station be repeated on Friday 22, this month because the declaration forms for the candidates were not dully signed by al the agents and thus didn’t not satisfy the Electoral Commission.
Asked why the election officers were withdrawn from the polling station on Saturday, Muhindo explained that they halted the exercise because it was allegedly associated with security threats from the voters.
He also noted that the election at Busunga polling station in Lake Katwe sub-county would be repeated because the voters didn’t vote, claiming that the register contained names of the people who do not live in the area.
However, Brian Kauntura, one of the candidates told the press that he wouldn’t participate in an election that has been organized on Friday because he believes the votes that he obtained during the day of elections were factual.
